Surrogacy

Surrogacy is the only way to have a genetically own child for women who don’t have a uterus or who have serious diseases. In the process of this treatment method, the embryo, which has been received after the fertilization of the genetic mother’s oocyte by the genetic father’s spermatozoon, is transferred into the organism of a surrogate mother. For 9 months the surrogate mother bears a child who she doesn’t have any genetic relationship with. The newborn is genetically and legally considered a child of the married couple whose embryo has been transferred to the uterus of the surrogate mother.

Indications to surrogacy

The surrogacy program is carried out only when there are the following medical indications:

  • ametria;
  • uterine cavity or carvical malformations;
  • diseases that make pregnancy and childbirth life-threatening for the woman;
  • multiple unsuccessful IVF attempts.

Who will help carry a child?

In order to become a surrogate mother, a woman must be physically and mentally healthy, and she must be 18 to 35 years old. A surrogate mother must have one or several children born in a natural way. If a potential surrogate mother is married, the legally certified written consent of her husband for the IVF program is required.

Ethical questions of surrogacy

The European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) considers the surrogacy a morally acceptable infertility treatment method. Surrogacy is allowed by the Ukrainian legislation.

It’s often the case that surrogacy is the only possible way to give birth to a genetically own child. Whether to resort to the help of a surrogate mother or not is the question only you are to decide upon. You should weigh all pros and contras and make a decision that will be the most suitable for your family.

The surrogacy program includes:

  • examination of a surrogate mom;
  • IVF program;
  • medical products for a surrogate mother;
  • prenatal care and maintenance of pregnancy.

The issues of remuneration for the surrogate mother and assisting her in the course of her pregnancy are agreed upon individually by the married couple and the surrogate mother.
